Wild and Wacky Wednesdays

Back in the early 1970’s, the Arab members of OPEC (Organization of Oil Producing Companies) doubled the cost of oil per barrel from $5.12 to $11.65. Quantities became limited and people had to wait in line for hours, with some lines over 400 miles long. The US had supported Isreal in the Yom Kipper war in 1973, so OPEC then decided to squeeze the US even more by placing an oil embargo against the US.

By the sunny hot summer of 1979, cars with license plates ending in odd numbers could only get gas on odd days, and those with even numbers only on the even days. No wonder the car makers started producing electric cars. Sure glad my little red Mazda gets 38 mpg on the road! OPEC isn’t finished with us yet.
