Listening to Hazel

What’s Your #1 Priority Tomorrow?

My #1 Priority for today is to sit down, take a deep breath, kick my legs up and think about where we go next.

We have been on a very tough journey this year, struggling with my health issues as a result of the toxins found in our newly purchased home back in March. We had to rebuild the inside of this house from the floors up and reached the finish line just days ago.

I had grown to hate this house we named Hazel because of what it had cost me, nearly my life with 10 ER visits in the span of 6 months, and more money than I could hardly pull together to repair this home full of pain and suffering. We had no idea the widow who lived here for 20 years had let Hazel slowly die in ways none of us could imagine.

But somewhere along the way of watching dumpsters of old history be thrown away, sketching ideas on motel notepads while we were exiled from our home, and watching her slowly emerge from the ashes, our hearts softened.

We had put more than money into this house. Our ideas and love had turned Hazel into a lovely and welcoming home for us and our family.

We threw Hazel on the market within hours of accomplishing our marathon rebuild…every single thing was new including the new design ideas drawn on hotel notepads, We had added 70% more beautiful and welcoming square footage to this freshly remodeled house. But is this what God truly had in mind for us?

Now we were free to follow our dreams to California and clear away the pain that Hazel had caused. Then life got in the way. Or was it God sending us a loud and clear message?

I had just pulled into Whole Foods when my world got rocked again. A drug induced wild and crazy couple came charging out of the store, jumped in their truck and crashed into my brand new car which was waiting to head to California next week. While a Good Samaritan was calling 911, I yelled at the guy, demanded he step out of his truck like a mom would scream at their kid!

He stood shocked and so was everyone watching, but it gave 911 enough time to start collecting the data. I knew he was going to bolt so I ran back around the car and grabbed my phone, snapping shots of his license plates and yelled out the number to the Good Samaritan. He told 911 while watching the driver nearly hit other cars while he barreled away.

The hit and run driver was identified and apprehended quickly, before the cops arrived to get my report. An exciting Saturday night in sleepy old Broomfield, Colorado.

Now we are stuck here in Colorado waiting to see how long it will take to repair the new car while the lease on our California house starts ticking away.

As we always do, we came up with new plans after spending yesterday afternoon driving up into the gorgeous fall mountains with the grandkids and dogs.

A million thoughts went through our heads while I cooked dinner. What if God had stopped us in our tracks with the crazy accident? Maybe it was spending the afternoon with our sweet grandkids, laughing and talking, while enjoying the changing leaves and pumpkin lattes.

Whatever the reason, we now have completely different plans for Hazel and us.
